What is a screw-type oil press?

A design is proposed for a screw-type oil press with a controllable gap between the plates, permitting two-stage pressing of the raw material. The configuration of the elliptical elements ensures rotation of the plates. Plate setups with minimum and maximum gaps are shown.

Does screw-pressing improve oil extraction performance?

By using screw-pressing at pilot plant scale, optimum oil recoveries from walnut, chia, and almond seeds were obtained at 7.5, 10, and 8% (WB) moisture contents, respectively (Mart¨ªnez et al. 2008, 2012, 2013 ). In each case, the oil extraction performance was also dependent on the pressing temperature and other processing conditions.

What type of screw press was used?

A Komet screw press (Model DD 85¡ªPK1 and PK2; IBG Monforts, Germany) was used. The effective and total lengths and the internal diameter of the press barrel were 6.7, 14.7, and 5.6 cm, respectively. The length and diameter of the screw were 19.5 and 5.3 cm, respectively.

Does a twin-screw extruder reduce oil recovery?

As an illustration, a decrease in oil recovery from 82 to 62% was found during the thermomechanical pressing of sunflower seeds using a twin-screw extruder of increasing volume and an increased feed rate from 14 to 22?kg/h, respectively, while maintaining the raw material characteristics and operating conditions (Dufaure et?al., 1999a).
