The seeds of sesame are produced in capsules, which burst upon maturity. Because of easier oil extraction, high stability, and drought resilience, sesame has been an important oilseed crop in the ancient times. Sesame was grown in the Indian subcontinent during Harrapan and Anatolian periods.
