What is palm kernel oil extraction & refining?

Palm kernel oil (PKO) extraction and refining techniques involves operations such as sorting of kernels, handling, mechanical pressing, filtration of crude oil, thermal, chemical and physical treatment of crude oil to obtain desired edible oil that suits variety of applications.

How is refined palm oil produced?

To produce refined palm oil (RPO), the objectionable impurities in the CPO are removed to obtain the required levels using two main methods: chemical or alkali refining and physical refining methods. Either of these is followed by fractionation as a final purification process to separate the oil into stearin and olein components.

How is crude palm kernel oil refined?

The crude palm kernel oil was refined mainly in three stages namely: the degumming stage, neutralization stage, odour and colour removal stage. The approach adopted was that of where 500ml of crude palm kernel oil put in a separating funnel and 500ml of distilled water at 1000C was added.

How is palm oil processed?

There are two major processing methods known as chemical and physical refining. Palm oil is by far the most important fractionated oil in the world; crude, semi- and fully refined palm oil can be fractionated in multi-stage, giving access to several products for specific applications.
