Where is the first vegetable oil produced in Kenya?

A worker at the Eni oilseed collection and pressing plant (agri-hub) in Makueni, Kenya. Italian multinational oil and gas company Eni, has started production of the first vegetable oil for bio-refineries in Kenya. Through its subsidiary Eni Kenya, the company set up an oilseed collection and pressing plant (agri-hub) in Makueni early this year.

Why is Makueni Agri-hub launching the export of vegetable oil?

¡°Just three months after the start-up of the Makueni agri-hub, we are launching the export of the vegetable oil for the biorefineries, through a vertical integration model that enables the promotion of sustainable local development while valorizing the supply chain for biofuels production.

Where will vegetable oil be delivered?

The first cargo of vegetable oil will be delivered to Eni's biorefinery in Gela, which was launched in 2019. This is one of the most innovative plants in Europe; it has high operational flexibility, being able to process different types of feedstock, and has an authorised capacity of 750,000 tonnes/year.

How can Kenya contribute to the decarbonisation process?

In order to contribute to the country's decarbonisation process, in December, 2020 President Uhuru Kenyatta and the CEO of Eni Claudio Descalzi discussed initiatives of circular economy, including the recovery, regeneration and reuse of agricultural and food waste produced in the country.
